47% of mothers of autistic children reported infertility. Other research has suggested that older women have a greater risk of having a child with autism and this ties in with the infertility issue as older women are also more likely to experience infertility or delay in getting pregnant.

In the study, the average age at which a mother gave birth to her first child was 35, whereas in the general US population it is 25.

Kristen Lyall, lead author of the study, said

“We found that a history of infertility and use of ovulation-inducing drugs was significantly associated with an increased risk of having a child with an autism spectrum disorder.”
